The Beginning
Five years ago, our managing director Jeremy Bogan was trying to get a telephone system set up for his company Segment Publishing. The telephone systems recommended by his phone provider required him to be locked into a long term contract for the system and a long term contract for support. Not to mention the systems were incredibly expensive, really difficult to use and locked you into a telephone company. He decided to review DIY systems and found they were incredibly difficult to set up, didn't have many features and were almost impossible to get support for. He knew what he wanted in a telephone system for his business so he decided to make it. That’s why vtalk exists - our vision was to create an easy to use, easy to configure telephone system for small business built by small business. Anyone that can use a web browser can set up and manage a vtalk.
The Box & The Team
The vtalk today is powered by Ruby on Rails (we're the only people in the world running Rails in an embedded environment) with a FreeBSD backend running on custom hardware all inside a little blue box made from aircraft-grade aluminium. We're a 100% Australian-owned company, comprising of a team working out of Sydney. All of our products are 100% designed, engineered and assembled in Australia, something we're extremely proud of. Our team is very flexible spanning people of many different backgrounds, from industrial design and fine art to electrical engineering and computer science. We're a development, design and build shop and vtalk is our greatest achievement to date.
